Which IKEA boxes fit my closet shelf?

Measure once. Check depth. Then try boxes before you buy another wrong size.

Measure the shelf, not the box first

Most wrong-size boxes come from measuring the box and guessing the shelf. Do it the other way round. Write down three numbers for the space you want to fill:

Measure the depth you can actually use. Hinges, trim, and a hanging rod often take an inch that the tape measure doesn’t.

The overhang trap

A box can be the right width and still stick out past the shelf. That is overhang: the box is deeper than the shelf, or deeper than the clearance in front of it. It matters more than it looks. Doors won’t close, the row looks sloppy, and a loaded box that hangs past the edge wants to tip forward.

IKEA sizes aren’t one “KALLAX cube”

Every collection has its own footprint. A SAMLA plastic box, a DRÖNA fabric cube, a TJENA paper box and a TROFAST bin are all different depths, and most come in several sizes. A third-party bin sold as “fits KALLAX” is sized for a KALLAX cube, which says nothing about your closet shelf.

If a box isn’t in the IKEA catalog, measure it the same way as the shelf: width, depth, height. That is all the planner needs to draw it.
